Over the past several years we have definitely seen a drastic improvement in the look of emoticons or smiley's as they are more commonly known. What started out as :) for a happy face, have been evolved into full 3D animated smiley happy faces. To compare, it's like taking a stick figure and developing a full animated cartoon.
